Empty Nests, Goat Rescue, and Alfred Hitchcock

I hope your holiday season included delicious meals and memorable adventures with family and friends and 2024 is off to a splendid start! Last fall, Chad and I experienced an empty nest for the first time. The first few weeks inspired waves of decluttering all those extra things no one seems to need anymore. This Advent season also gifted special meaning for us as parents, welcoming back our independent young adults.

The day after Christmas also brought some unexpected challenges. MK’s goat delivered twins on December 26. She quickly began declining and had to be euthanized the next day. We moved the babies to our farm, actually our garage, for a bit more warmth and convenience keeping up with bottle feedings every 4 hours. I’m happy to report that Vixen and Rudy are doing well!

In January, my first article was published in Smart Women Smart Money Magazine! While I was never a formal student of finance, my grandmother and namesake, Margaret Stewart Roche, shared a lifetime of wisdom through her lessons of Scottish frugality and prudence.

March also brings an Irish adventure. It’s not often that I have the opportunity to combine my love of music, history, and my farm business into one grand presentation:

Do you enjoy Irish music? Want to learn more about the life on the Emerald Isle? Join Maggie Murphy for a morning of Irish music, history, trivia, prizes, and a special guest!

Empty nests, goats, and Alfred Hitchcock…I appreciate how life keeps presenting these random, winding paths. Speaking of my final point, I recently came across an interview with Mr. Hitchcock where he was asked to elaborate on happiness. His answer resonated with me. To paraphrase, happiness is often found on the horizon, working on that next bit of adventure, a project with purpose. May your 2024 continue to be filled with exciting, purposeful adventures. Slainte!

  1. “happiness is often found on the horizon, working on that next bit of adventure, a project with purpose”

Where would any of us be if we didn’t have that next goal/project that keeps us moving forward and striving to be better. Without that, life would certainly be boring and depressing.
